Craziest Break Ever

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 20, 2013, 10:35 AM

Hey everyone! Just popping in to update you on my life for no good reason. :) I just got back from my spring break... yes. On a Wednesday. But that's the end part of my story, allow me to start at the beginning...

Two Thursdays ago I woke up with that off feeling, turned on my computer and found my first flight was getting delayed by a half hour. Okay, no big deal. I went to work and classes and came back early because I knew I wouldn't be productive at work and I was just itching to go home. I finished my packing and looked at my email. Flight delayed another half hour. Great, I'd be running across O'Hare airport to catch my connecting flight (for those of you who don't fly much, Chicago's airport is HUGE). Then, another email. Flight now scheduled to arrive the same minute my next flight would leave. After yelling at the email, I scrambled to find the airline's number, shouted at the automatic voice until it connected me to a live adviser somewhere on the other side of the world. She was polite, but really needed a lesson in geography as she tried to reroute my flight to the other side of the state I was flying to (a 6 hour drive) and tried to have me leave from the next closest airport 2 hours to the North. So... I asked for her manager and found myself giving my sob story to the next person. Eventually I managed to get myself on a flight that would get me in at the same time as my original one, but... I had to leave that very second as my flight would soon be leaving for Denver. Instead of two 1.5 hour flights I wound up with a 2 hour and a 3 hour flight. Finally, I made it home at 1:30AM Friday morning. On the bright side, I got to see mountains. :D

Then, on Wednesday I went to the dentist to get a cavity on a wisdom tooth filled... but when the dentist looked in she exclaimed "Oh, wow, that's a big one". Never a good sign. An hour later wound up getting the bottom two wisdom teeth out. It wasn't actually too bad until afterwards. Since I had been numbed up to crazy levels I couldn't talk for a few hours and almost couldn't swallow the painkillers I was directed to take. (I just took an extra advil instead of getting the prescriptions for the hospital-grade stuff filled) My cheeks were puffy and painful for the rest of the week. :(  They still haven't healed completely, but I have been able to eat normal food since day two, mostly because I'm determined to eat healthy instead of just ice cream and I'm not overly fond of soup.

Monday morning came around and I had to leave again... however, there was a blizzard raging at my destination. I called the airlines to check if my second flight would be affected, but the automated voice assured me that I would make it. I got on my first flight and tried my best to ignore the guy sitting behind me with a cold who clutched onto my chair for dear life during take off and landing. I felt sorry for him; I used to be scared of flying too, but I've become such a frequent flier that it doesn't bother me anymore. We landed three hours later, a little ahead of schedule, back in Denver. I check the boards, found my next flight just down the hall. It was still on time so I scramble to find something for lunch/second breakfast as the time zone was -2 hours from what I was used to. While I was eating my lunch, the attendant came on over the PA and announced we'd be having a 20 to 25 minute delay. Uh-oh... sinking feeling getting worse. Half an hour later they announced there was a chance we would have to land in a city 3 hours to the West. I knew I was in trouble then. The state I was flying to closes their expressway when conditions get bad and additionally, I'm a few years shy of being able to rent a car there. Knowing there wasn't anything I could really do about it, I decided it was better to be safe than sorry. Another half an hour passed and we began to board the plane. Halfway through her safety speech, the flight attendant stopped talking and the pilot came on. We needed to deplane as we were being delayed another hour. I was feeling a little more relieved to get off the plane as I didn't want to fly into 30mph winds with half a mile visibility. Sounded like a bad idea to me and the winter weather where I was going is nothing to laugh at. Back in the terminal I watched as several people rerouted and canceled their flights. Lucky ducks. I don't have a car so I couldn't do that. Then suddenly, I was stranded in Colorado as my flight was canceled. Customer service put me on the next guaranteed flight: 7:30pm the next day. (It was only 12pm at this moment). Aaaaannnddd, since it was weather related they weren't going to pay for a hotel room! :(  thankfully, I have relatives in that area who were home and put me up for the night. :D So, I wound up with a day and a half in nice sunny, 54F (12C) weather. Ahhhhhhhh. Mini vacation! :D Then my flight in last night got delayed by almost 2 hours. I finally staggered into my apartment at 12AM. I would say it's good to be back, but no... it's too cold. 0F with -18F windchill (-17C, windchill -28C).

HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SPRING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :sarcasm: Average temps are supposed to be 40F/5C
